She was in the nation's first all-female improv team, "Big Purse", in 1992. She complemented this work with an Associates Degree in Theater from Palm Beach State College. So I drowned myself in stories about other worlds, people going out on adventures, and learning about strange cultures from different parts of life. My parents would also tell me stories about Iraq, how it's like this magical oasis. That is until Saddam Hussein came and ruined everything. They told me how lucky I was her compared to how they had it in Iraq. So I felt like I owed a debt to the country and joined the United States Air Force and got the one job I never wanted: nuclear missile operator. But when you look like the enemy, some people treat you like the enemy. I got an early discharge, went through a depression, then climbed out of it through writing. I discovered that many people that look like me are always portrayed like the bad guy, so I write about Arab characters doing cool things in fantastical worlds, much like the characters I grew up with.
