They told me how lucky I was her compared to how they had it in Iraq. So I felt like I owed a debt to the country and joined the United States Air Force and got the one job I never wanted: nuclear missile operator. But when you look like the enemy, some people treat you like the enemy. I got an early discharge, went through a depression, then climbed out of it through writing. I discovered that many people that look like me are always portrayed like the bad guy, so I write about Arab characters doing cool things in fantastical worlds, much like the characters I grew up with.
